Sound MixerLike a DP for sound, the sound mixer is the department head for location sound. They don't just record, they mix, monitor, enter metadata, keep everything in sync, manage timecode, coordinate with other departments, anticipating and mitigating problems, improvise, adapt and overcome challenges. Their very presence on set brings blessing from the patron goddess of sound. |
Boom OpLike the camera op or 1st AC for camera dept this is the 1st lieutenant for Sound. They guide the boom pole with ninja reflexes, cue silently, stay hidden, move gracefully, watch for boom shadows, invisible frame lines, read body language and minds to anticipate movements. This requires much concentration and two hands. A sound mixer can't properly mix and boom without 2 sets of eyes and 4 arms. |
Sound UtilityThe util is a wizard that has many responsibilities: this may include updating the sound log, acting as a 2nd boom op, laving up talent, liaison between departments, cable wrangler, repair equipment, mix, kill sound demons, assist the boom op and mixer, etc. |
